The past few months have marked an exciting period of progress and recognition for Latrobe Magnesium (LMG). From commissioning milestones at our world-first Demonstration Plant to international engagement and government recognition, each achievement highlights the growing momentum behind our mission — to turn industrial waste into valuable resources and position Australia as a leader in sustainable magnesium production.
The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) approved our existing Pilot Project Licence allowing us to proceed with commissioning and operations of our Stage 1 Demonstration Plant in Hazelwood North, Victoria, as of Friday, August 15th. The approval enabled the recommencement of our patented Hydrometallurgical (Hydromet) operation to demonstrate steady-state production of Magnesium Oxide (MgO) and byproducts—char, silica, agricultural lime, and iron oxide—from brown coal ash.
We successfully completed operator training ahead of the plant start-up. The program combined classroom learning with hands-on field exercises, covering:
i. Company values, safety, and site inductions
ii. Emergency response procedures
iii. Operational routines and shift handovers
iv. Systems training for process control and maintenance
v. Practical walkthroughs of production and materials handling
Our team is now fully equipped, and ready to bring the Stage 1 Demonstration Plant online. A big thanks to everyone involved in ensuring a smooth and safe transition into operations.

Production officially commenced Magnesium Oxide (MgO) production at our Stage 1 Demonstration Plant at the end of September— a major milestone in our patented magnesium process and a big step towards commercial-scale operations. This achievement proves the strength of our proprietary technology, de-risks operations, and positions us for steady-state production. MgO stockpiling is now underway, with first deliveries to offtake partners and validation trials with multiple parties coming soon. We’re proud to be progressing towards becoming Australia’s first producer of environmentally sustainable magnesium — supporting industries with a critical material for the future.

Latrobe Magnesium was proud to be selected as one of 20 Australian Critical Minerals companies, whose projects collectively encompass a portfolio of 15 different Critical Minerals, to join a CEO level delegation that visited Washington and New York last month. Facilitated by Kevin Rudd and his team at the Australian Embassy Washington DC, the delegation engaged with senior U.S. Government, Defense, Defense Primes, and Investment Fund representatives to explore Australian Critical Mineral producers potential contribution towards U.S. national security priorities and critical minerals supply chain resilience. In New York, David Paterson met with Matt Rohm, CEO of our distributor Metal Exchange, and a suite of potential investment partners to discuss a range of debt and equity models supporting LMG’s next growth phase.

The Net Zero Economy Authority (NEZA) — an Australian Federal Government agency — plays a key role in driving Australia’s transition to a clean energy future by supporting regions, industries, and communities on the path to net zero emissions. Their recognition underscores the importance of projects like our world-first Demonstration Plant in the Latrobe Valley, where we’re transforming a legacy energy region into a hub for sustainable innovation and advanced manufacturing. Using our patented technology, we’re pioneering the world’s first process to produce magnesium metal and magnesium oxide from brown coal fly ash — reducing waste and emissions, creating local jobs, and attracting regional investment. We’re honoured to be recognised by an organisation that shares our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community growth — helping position the Latrobe Valley at the forefront of Australia’s net zero transformation.
